Developing our own child welfare laws

An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Metis children, youth and families (Bill C-92) was legislated on January 1, 2020.

Overview

This act recognizes and affirms the inherent rights of Indigenous Nations to develop their own child welfare laws. In doing so, our Agency is committed toward working with each Nation on a path towards self-determination with each Nation so that they may provide child welfare practices in a manner which best meets the needs of their families and Nation.

Our goal

Our goal is to work with and meet each Nation, to assess and analyze data gathered and use this information to guide and coordinate the efforts moving forward. These are historical opportunities, and we want to ensure that we can best support and assist Nations in whatever way possible to make these transitions in an informed and clear manner. This will be done through a number of training and engagement opportunities we are hoping to roll out in the fall of 2024.
