Red Dress Day - Honoring May 5th

May 5, 2025

National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S)

May 5 is recognized as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S). It is also known as Red Dress Day in many communities.

This day is a time for reflection, remembrance, and action. It honors the lives of Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ people who have gone missing or who have been murdered. It also acknowledges the ongoing systemic violence, racism, and colonialism that continue to contribute to this national crisis.

Across the country, people may wear red, hang red dresses in public spaces, or participate in vigils, walks, or community gatherings. These acts serve as visible reminders that Indigenous lives are not disposable-and that every life taken leaves deep and lasting impacts on families, communities, and Nations.
